“Terribly sorry about the wait, sir, but it seems that there will be at least an hour until the next open table. We’ll send you a text message when the table is ready.”
“Oh, no worries! I’ll be waiting for the text,” Calvin chirpily replied, before turning around and letting out the biggest sigh of his life.
“Guys, it’ll be at least an hour. Reviews said they take at least twice their estimate. What are we supposed to do in some industrial park for two hours?”
“Dunno, grab some food elsewhere?”
“I already gave them my phone number, we’re not doing that.”
“Whatever. Maybe someone will leave soon and we’ll get to go in just a few minutes from now,” hoped Toby. The other four laughed at the concept, and they all glanced down at their phones, browsing some social media.
Calvin was the first to put his phone away. “Of course, the moment we’re stuck outside, bored, that’s when the socials all go quiet.”
“Yeah, mine are all empty as well,” reciprocated Willow, quickly followed by the rest of the group.
Calvin cleared his throat. Toby did a little twirl. Jenny and Willow absentmindedly made out. Takeo watched the moon rise.
Calvin’s phone buzzed with a text message, and everyone glanced over expectantly.
“Sorry, my mom wants to make sure I’m not trying to date Tak again.”
“She thinks you didn’t learn from the last three times?” Toby wondered.
“Tell her that even I know better than that,” replied Takeo.
Silence fell again.
Calvin sat down on the curb, watching his notifications while his mind wandered off elsewhere. Takeo sat down next to him, and leaned his head on Calvin’s shoulder.
Toby kicked a rock around behind them.
The notification didn’t come any sooner.
